WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD — Deputy State Fire Marshals charged a Hagerstown man Wednesday after he threatened to blow up and burn down the Motel 6 he was staying at.

Michael Sean Hafer (Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office)
Investigators with the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said Michael Sean Hafer, 28, made threats that he was going to blow up and burn down the hotel, located at 11321 Massey Boulevard. He also told other guests that he was making pipe bombs to carry out the destruction.
At around 7:30 a.m., the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the motel after Hafer made the threats and requested the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad to search Hafer’s room.
Investigators worked throughout the day, and after securing search warrants, they searched Hafer’s room and a nearby temporary storage unit. They later concluded that Hafer did not have explosive materials and determined that the guests of the forty-six occupied rooms could safely return.
Hafer was charged with Threat of Mass Violence and two counts of Arson Threat. He was taken to the Washington County Detention Center and released on recognizance.
