CHARLES TOWN, W.Va- Inside the historic Jefferson County Courthouse Tuesday, 16th district senate candidates Patricia Rucker and John Doyle announced two upcoming debates that Republican incumbent Rucker hopes will set an example in political civility
“We basically want to show our constituency how we can have a discussion on the issues but discuss it in a respectful manner,” Rucker said, “Both John and I respect each other. We have very different opinions but also know how to work together.”
Former state delegate and Democratic candidate Doyle believes this will help voters better understand the issues
“It’s important that the voters understand the issues,” Doyle said, “Senator Rucker and I can discuss all these issues in a way that they will help people get a better understanding.”
Both say they are disappointed with the mudslinging seen in both local and national politics.
“So many of these campaigns become personal and full of name calling,” Rucker said, “They’re not discussing the issues.”
Doyle also floated the possibility of holding the debates without a moderator
“We want to hear from the audience. We may each make a brief opening statement then take questions,” he said, “Not having a moderator puts the onus on each of us to be courteous to the other.”
The first debate is set for October 1st at the Robert C Byrd Center on Shepherd University’s campus in Jefferson County. The second date is yet to be set but will take place in Inwood in Berkeley County.
