MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Berkeley County commissioners joined members of the Berkeley-Morgan Board of Health, and staff of the Berkeley County Health Department Friday to celebrate the kickoff of a $1.9 million expansion project for the department’s facilities.

“We’re planning for the future, not necessarily what we need today, but what we’re going to need tomorrow,” said Bill Kearns, health department administrator, after Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony.

The project involves construction of a 4,000 square-foot addition, which will house the Environmental Health division of the health department, which is located at 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg.

Existing building space will be renovated for the Clinical Services division of the health department.

Lantz Construction Co., of Winchester, Va., was awarded the $1.9 million project on May 30 by the Berkeley County Commission.

Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday.

The project was designed by Crabtree, Rohrbaugh & Associates.

“We’re excited to have another opportunity to work with everybody here in Berkeley County,” said Lantz Construction Project Manager Tyler Post said.

Funding for the project includes a $608,000 Community Development Block Grant that was obtained by the County and $168,028 in County funding.

The Health Department is funding the remaining the portion of the expansion and renovation project.

“The services provided by our county health department are a very important part of our responsibility to provide for the health, safety and welfare of the community,” Berkeley County Commission Vice President Eddie Gochenour said. “We are happy to see this project get underway.”
