MARTINSBURG, W.Va – A wanted man is in custody after Berkeley County sheriff’s officers were greeted with a chainsaw on Wednesday.
The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department received information Wednesday as to the location of Cory Cutlip who was wanted for multiple charges through multiple agencies spanning multiple counties. At 6:33 pm, Deputy Clark, Deputy Keller, and Corporal Shockey arrived at the reported location on Rockcliff Drive where Cutlip was suspected to be located.
Deputies observed the suspect’s vehicle in the driveway and were met by the suspect’s mother in front of the house. Deputy Keller observed Cutlip on the front porch and gave the command to stop and come to deputies. He did not comply with orders and retreated into the trailer before deputies on scene could apprehend him.
Cutlip retrieved a chainsaw from inside and re-emerged to the porch, yelling that he wouldn’t go back to jail and that officers were going to have to kill him with his chainsaw running. Deputies continued giving commands to Cutlip to stop and put the chainsaw down.
As Cutlip’s behavior escalated, deputies became fearful that he was mounting the courage to hurt himself, his mother, or law enforcement.
Deputy Keller then transitioned to his taser and was able to successfully deploy a cartridge which caused Cutlip to drop the chainsaw and fall off the back of the porch. A short foot pursuit ensued and Cutlip was taken to the ground and arrested without further incident.
Cutlip had been featured on the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department’s latest installment of “Wanted Wednesday” posters.
