HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — There will be no Brunswick service on the MARC Train line this morning that after the bridge that carries CSX trains between West Virginia and Maryland caught on fire Monday and sustained heavy damage.
The Harpers Ferry Bridge, which is located in Sandy Hook, Maryland, across the Potomac River from Harpers Ferry, caught fire at around 3:30 p.m. Washington County, Maryland emergency officials said there was heavy damage.
“Due to the high temperatures and extensive fire damage, additional units from Washington County, Jefferson County, and Frederick County were called in, along with water tankers from all three counties due to limited water supply access,” Washington County
The fire was brought under control by 5:30 p.m. There were no injuries reported.
CSX had to cancel Amtrak and the MARC commuter train due to the damage.
The bridge is part of CSX’s main line.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage will be the subject of an investigation today. MARC Rail representatives believe they will know by today how long the MARC line will be impacted.
Crews requested additional Washington County units and support from Jefferson and Frederick counties as well as Loudoun County in Virginia. Water tankers from several counties were also called due to limited water supply access.
