Miss West Virginia, Karrington Childress, was a guest on Panhandle Live last month.

ORLANDO, Fla. –  West Virginia’s representatives are in Orlando this week for the Miss American and Miss America’s Teen competitions.

Karrington Childress is a native of Charles Town.  A student at Shepherd University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, she has plans to become a literacy specialist.

She created “Karrington’s Kidz Readers are Leaders” Book Club where she hosts a weekly Sunday evening story hour.

She says over the last three years she has read over 175 books in over 2,000 hours of stories on Facebook Live and YouTube.

She has been using her year of service around the Mountain State to promote reading among school age children and raise awareness about the value of reading:

Childress has partnered with Read Aloud West Virginia, The Children’s Home Society of Martinsburg and The Bolivar Community Center to place free libraries and encourage reading.  She is partnering with the West Virginia Department of Education through its  Ambassadors for Learning program.

She was crowned Miss West Virginia back in June and still is in awe:

She and Miss West Virginia’s Teen, Washington High School senior Allison Dodson are in Orlando this week for the Miss America Competition.
