MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A structure fire early Wednesday morning claimed a life in South Berkeley County.
A representative of the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department tells The Panhandle News Network they were alerted just after 1:00 in the morning to a structure fire with entrapment in the 3100 Block of Winchester Avenue south of Martinsburg.
“When they arrived, they encountered fire at the front of the house. A crew located one victim just inside the front door. The victim was deceased.”
Fire crews continued to search for a second victim. That person was located outside and was treated and transported to a local hospital.
The fire also claimed the life of a pet.
The incident is now under investigation through the WV State Fire Marshal’s office. The identities of the occupants were not released.
Crews responding in addition to the Baker Heights Volunteer Fire Department included the South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Department, The 167th Airlift Wing Fire Department, the Martinsburg Fire Department, Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Fire Department, and the Berkeley County Emergency Ambulance Authority.
