Martinsburg, W.Va– Long-time Shepherd head coach Monte Cater was unveiled as a member of this year’s College Football Hall of Fame class.

 

Cater amassed 275 career victories at both Lakeland College (30-24-1) and Shepherd (245-93-1).

 

Cater reached his milestone 250th victory in the Super Region 1 final against Slippery Rock in 2015, Shepherd then went on to reach and then lose in the division II championship game.

The Shelbyville, Illinois native retired in 2018 after 31 seasons at Shepherd, handing the reins to longtime assistant Ernie McCook who led the Rams to a Super Region 1 title in this last season.

 

Cater claimed 17 conference titles throughout his illustrious career in 3 different conferences. He was a 12-time conference coach of the year (8 times in the WVIAC, 4 times in the MEC) and was inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

 

Cater will be inducted with the likes of Reggie Bush, Luke Kuechly, and fellow coaching legend Paul Johnson.
