MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — The iconic Doughboy monument commemorating local heroes from World War I used to stand on King Street in Martinsburg.
It had to be moved when the federal government planned to dispose of the federal building after advertising it for public sale. Community members mothballed it in 2020 and gathered funds to refurbish it.

Last November, it was moved to its permanent location in War Memorial Park.

Here’s former Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation Director Steve Catlett:

On Veterans Day, the statue will be rededicated in its permanent home during a ceremony at War Memorial Park in Martinsburg. The traditional Veterans Day Ceremony will take place at 11 a.m with the dedication following.

The statue was originally dedicated on New Year’s Eve on 1925 and built by donations from local citizens
