CROSS JUNCTION, VA — A Berkeley Springs man died Tuesday in a single vehicle crash in Cross Junction, Virginia.

The crash shut down the road for nearly five hours.

The Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office reports just before 3 p.m., a 2015 Volkswagen Golf was traveling south in the 6000 block of Route 522 when it left the pavement and drove on the shoulder for several yards before hitting a large tree head on. The vehicle went on another 60 feet into the woods and came to rest on its roof.

The car caught on fire, consuming the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s department. The driver was the lone occupant and died at the scene.

Official identification is pending from the medical examiner, but the Sheriff’s office says in speaking with the individual’s family, they believe it was 25-year-old Benjamin Douglas of Berkeley Springs.

Family members told investigators Douglas drove that route to and from work on a daily basis.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
