CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Back-to-school shoppers can save some cash this weekend in both West Virginia and Virginia.

That’s because beginning Friday, the state sales tax in both states will be suspended for the weekend on specific items.

In Virginia, it’s a three-day event that saves Virginians money on school supplies, clothing and footwear. In addition, shoppers can purchase select hurricane-and-emergency preparedness products without the sales tax tacked-on. That includes some gas-powered chainsaws and portable generators.

For West Virginia shoppers, the sales tax is suspended for three days on
–Certain clothing with a purchase price of $125 or less
–Certain school supplies with a purchase price of $50 or less
–Certain school instruction material with a purchase price of $20 or less
–Certain laptop and tablet computers with a purchase price of $500 or less; and
–Certain sports equipment with a purchase price of $150 or less.

Items purchased for use in a trade or business are not exempt under the sales tax holiday.

There is no limit on the amount of the total purchase. The qualification is determined by each individual item.
