Martinsburg, W.Va — both Panhandle teams where victorious in day one of the West Virginia Little League state tournament.
Martinsburg 7-6 Logan
Donovan Nichols, who just the day before won the tournament’s home run derby, had a 2 run blast in the first inning to give Martinsburg an early lead.
Landon Hall (Logan) answered with a homer of his own, a 3 run shot OVER the scoreboard in the bottom of the same inning to give Logan the lead right back.
Martinsburg plated 3 more runs in the 2nd. 2 runs scored on Logan miscues. A wild pitch, a misplayed grounder, and then Nichols stole home on a delayed steal to give Martinsburg the lead 5-4. They led the rest of the way.
Leading 7-6 in the bottom of the 6th, Martinsburg allowed both Carter Frye and Carson Hale of Logan to reach but Braden Brown recorded the last out and stranded both runners.
Martinsburg is set to play Saturday at 6 PM at Oatesdale Park.
Jefferson 5-1 Summersville
Jefferson lead from start to finish after scoring twice on wild pitches in the bottom of the first inning.
Mason Lowery and Andy Roberts combined to no hit Summersville through 4.2 innings.
Jefferson plays again Saturday at 6:30 at Oatesdale Park.
