Washington County, MD  — A Hedgesville man faces multiple charges in a mass shooting in Smithsburg on Thursday.

23-year-old Joe Esquivel is in custody. He stands accused of murdering three co-workers and injuring a fourth at  Columbia Machine in Western Maryland.

Esquivel reportedly fled the scene and was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with Maryland State Police a short time later. A trooper was injured and has been treated and released from the hospital.

Esquivel is being held without bond in Washington County. He faces multiple charges including first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault and attempted murder.

The victims of the shooting have been identified as  -Charles Minnick Jr., age 31;  Joshua Wallace, age 30; Mark Frey, age 50.

42-year-old Brandon Michaels was injured and last reportedly in the hospital.
