MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Two construction workers were injured when a vehicle ran off the road and hit them yesterday near Poor House Farm Park.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office reports on Wednesday March 02, just before 5 in the afternoon, law enforcement responded to a reported vehicle crash involving a single vehicle and two pedestrians in the area of the 4400 block of Poor House Road.

Two pedestrians who had been completing work along the road with construction equipment were struck by a passenger vehicle. The driver reportedly did not immediately stop on scene but instead drifted southbound away from the accident for approximately 1/4 mile.

The sheriff’s offices said the two men, 29-year-old Jacob Drake of Charles Town and 59-year-old Walter Lemin Sr. of Hopewell PA had been standing alongside their equipment while wearing reflective safety gear and hard hats at the time of the collision. A Toyota Rav 4 struck the equipment and then the pedestrians on the passenger side of the vehicle, causing significant injuries.

Drake was transported by EMS to Berkeley Medical Center for his injuries where he remains in stable condition.

Lemin was transported to INOVA Fairfax and listed in critical condition.

Poor House Road was closed completely between Poor House Park and the 4500 block of Poor House Road, for approximately 2 1/2 hours while the scene was processed.

The investigation continues.  Anyone that may have information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office at (304) 267-7000.
