HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. — A busy road for commuters traveling from West Virginia into Frederick and points beyond is set to close for three months.
67th District Delegate John Doyle said Jefferson County legislators met with the state Department of Highways in late January.
He said the DOH has decided to close US 340 “between the bridges” at Harpers Ferry from October 1 to December 31. The closures are necessary to bring in crews to mitigate the unstable rocks high above the road.
In a social media post last week, Delegate Doyle said traffic will be directed through Mechanicsville, VA, west of Hillsboro, where Virginia Route 671 connects with Virginia Route 9. That amounts to a 22-mile detour, according to Doyle.
He said during the meeting, lawmakers asked if one lane could be closed at a time. He said they were told there would be occasions where rocks would fall on both lanes.
Delegate Doyle said he suggested erecting a temporary bridge between Sandy Hook Maryland and Harpers Ferry but that idea was rejected.
